VERY UGLY INCIDENTS.
TROOPS FIRE ON CROWD. (Received 2 p.m.) PEKING, August 12. Trouble at Tientsin broke out following the efforts of a number of agitators to cause non-striking mill workers to walk out. The police guards, reinforced by soldiers, went to the mills. All the afternoon the strikers marched in procession until the temper of the crowd was very ugly. Stones were thrown at the police, and attempts made to rush the mills, culminating in an attempt to rush the police and troops. A cordon of guards then fired. An eye-witness states that about 200 shots were fired. The crowd dispersed immediately. The situation at present is quiet.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.).
