COW IN THE ROAD

MISHAP NEAR PAEROA

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, this day. A motor ear accident, fortunately not attended with serious results, occurred on the main Paeroa-Xetherton road late on Saturday night. Mr. Dick Spinks and his brother were returning to Paeroa from Xgatea, in the Hauraki Plains, in a service car, travelling at a moderate pace, when a cow was noticed lying across the middle of the road. Mr. Spiaks swerved the car so as to mis 3 the animal, but simultaneously the cow rose 1, to its ieet in the path of the car. The impact ,, rendered the steering gear useless, and the car nose-dived into a drain carrying about eight feet of water on the side of the road. Neither of the occupants were injured, but loth had a miraculous escape from serious consequences, as the wind-screen was shattered, the hood crushed in, and the mud-guards and running boards twisted. Mr. Spinks has driven the service car between Paeroa and Ha raki Plains over two years, and never before had a mishap. The car is still lying, a wreck, in the drain.
