CHRISTCHURCH, Monday

Seventeen members of the crew of the steamer Willaston were arrested this evening on a charge of refusing duty and were lodged in the Lyttelton

lock-up. Owing to a shortage of stokehold hand 3 six local men were engaged at the New Zealand rates of pay and conditions, and when the vessel was ready to proceed to sea those on the English articles refused to work unless they were granted the same wages and conditions as the new members of the crew, hence the arrests.
