HARBOUR BOARD MATTERS.
CONCESSION FOR NIAGARA,
REPAIRS TO WHARVES
At the Auckland Harbour Board meeting yesterday afternoon, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie presiding, a concession in berthage rates for the Niagara waa sought by the Union Company. It was explained that the steamer had been undergoing overhaul during her two weeks' enforced stay at Auckland. The board was asked to remit the berthage rates by half. The request was referred to the board in committee.
It was decided to inform the Waterside Workers' Union that if the ship■ping companies and "waterside workers were prepared to erect their own building providing accommodation for ■waiting and engagement rooms, the board would grant a lease of land in a suitable position at a nominal rental.
A request by the Birkenhead Borough Council for the board to remove the ehed of Birkenhead wharf and replace it with a waiting room similar to those on the Quay Street waterfront was declined. It was decided to inform the council that if it was prepared to find the interest and sinking fund, the board would be prepared to consider the matter.
The board agreed to pay half the cost of repairs to Defence wharf, Devonport, provided the Defence Department was agreeable to lease half of the wharf to the board. The estimated cost of repairs is £550.
