HOUSE OR SHOP?
- ■ • - QUESTION FOR COURT. POINT IN PAINTERS' AWARD. Decision was reserved by the Court of Arbitration on the question as to whether an employer's residence, at which he keeps gear and surplua material, can be regarded in the terms of the Dominion Painters' and Decorators' award as a shop. The question arose when the inspector of awards asked for an interpretation of clause 5a of the award. The union claimed that the employee was entitled to compute his travelling time from 1$ miles from his residence, which was also nis place of business, said Mr. H. Campbell. For the employers, Mr. S. E. Wright said the whole fact in dispute was that the taking of the employer's house as his shop would result in the whole of the waterfront coming under the suburban work clause, which was absurd. It was contended that the employer whose case was cited had no shop in the meaning of the award.
