"JUST FOOLISHNESS."

* 4 A PENSIONED SOLDIER. LARGE SUM IN BANK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Friday. A middle-aged man, Thomas Ward, was charged under the War Pensions Act with making a fatee declaration. Evidence was given that defendant, in applying for a pension, declared that his personal belongings were £40 in the Savings Bank, but when inquiries were made it was found that he really had £515 deposited. Defendant said his action was just foolishness. Counsel for the Commissioner of Pensions said he did not desire to press for a heavy penalty. The action was brought as a warning. After warning defendant of the seriousness of the charge, the magistrate ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. Defendant was ordered to pay costs.
