SHORTAGE OF CLERGY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Your correspondent Mr. N. E. Burton expressed some stimulating thoughts in his review of the position of the Anglican Church, but many will be inclined to think he has not quite placed his finger on the weak spot, and they will also doubt his opinion that the intellectual conflicts between science and religion are almost all over; at least co far as New Zealand is concerned there do not appear to be grounds for such optimism. The eermons that are pounded out week by week here would rather come under the heading of superstition than science. Here and there the clergy grudingly follow on the heels of science, and we are thankful for their progress, such as it is; but, unfortunately, the same progress is not maintained Godwards, and that is just the crux of all Christian problems to-day. Mr. Burton says their problem* is one of finance rather than intellect these days. I prefer to think it is a question of spirituality not historicity or anything else. Seek ye flr6t the kingdom of heaven, and matters of finance, intellect and history will become self-adjusting. At present the Church can tell us just an much as the scientist about the goal of mankind, and that is—nothing. The need of the day is a modern Plofcinus. —I am, etc., J. SWALES.
