AUCKLAND MUSEUM.
' ADDITION TO COLLECTION. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The council of the Auckland Institute and Museum met yesterday afternoon, Sir James Gunson presiding. The curator reported that Dr. Wilkin had presented an old korowai mat and several other interesting specimens. . 'Miss E. M- A. Johnston had presented her collection of Australian shells, of which over 80 species had been added to. .tha museum .collection. A collection of Maori and Moriori adzes, fishhooks, mats and cloaks, and a set of bones of extinct birds from the Chatham Islands, including skulls of the giant rail and the giant crow, had also been received. Mr. George Graham continued to add to the collection, and during the month he had presented three important Melanesian clubs, including one of the rare i.lotus Fl_i,.aV'ct_rious bamboo and. gftUrd .flute, -and. five feather prontlet fromithe Torres. Strait Islands. The museum was 'to" be congratulated on the continued co-operatior. of several of its members who contributed towards the public interest and the cause of science. An important collection had been deposited by Mrs.: Brown,' of Remuera. It comprised handsome Maori cloaks, taiahas, meres, paddles, spears, and adzes, the latter including a large historic greenstone adze rediscovered some years ago in the south of the province. A fine specimen of the Emperor penguin, taken by a member of Shackleton'. first Antarctic expedition, had also been purchased. Before complete specifications of the cases and fittings for the new museum could be drawn.up.it'was" necessary that a complete reviejtV al the' collection, -both exhibited and''-taxed, be made. To that end it was recopimeridfed that the -geological collections; be systematically stored in the order of. their future display, and that the geological room be made available as a studio in which the ethnological collections,- particularly the extensive stored-"material, could'be assembled and classified.' '" The display arrangements for the new museum could then be definitely fixed,.... the material appropriately packed for its rapid redisplay, and specifications of the cases and fittings required, properly drawn up. The report was adopted. It was decided to loan for exhibition in the Dunedin exhibition, a collection of ores and mining minerals previously presented by a Waihi mining company to museum. r • , Six"new .members'.were elected.
