PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

At the monthly committee meeting of tha- • Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty td Animals, the Rev. Mr. Smalliield presided. There were also present: Mesdames Coats, Crulckshank, Devore, Turner, Miss Jackson, Dr. Purchas, Dr. Beattie (president, Rev. J| ' Calder, Mr. Ellerbcck, Mr. Brook. The secretary reported that 24 cases had been attended to in the office during the month. Of these 11 dealt with troublebetween husbands and wives, 10 concerned children, 1 affiliation case, and 2 various matters. Five cases were taken to Court i and orders made in each. The Inspector . reported that she had investigated 20 ca6es, making 79 visits to homes and to obtain I witnesses, and spent all Friday morning. in Court. The inspector (P.C.A.) reported that ha had given 24 cautions In cases of ill-used and neglected animals, and had humanely destroyed 7 animals. One case was taken to Court. It was resolved to alter the date of the committee meetings, and to resume the old day—the second Monday in the month at 2 p.m.—as being more convenient to the majority of the members. Miss Sophia Hoffmann was elected a Ufa member, she having donated a sum of £10 to the fuhds. It was resolved to omit the usual annual essay competition this year, as It was considered unwise to further burden the school children, as their school year has been curtailed through tbe infantila paralysis epidemic. The competition will be resumed next year. A suggestion from the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to> Animals to hold a conference of all* the P.C.A. societies, in Dunedin during the Exhibition period, probably in January, 1926, was approved, and it was resolved 'to sen« a delegate if possible..
