ASSAULT BY MAORIS.
THREE PRISONERS SENTENCED. VICTIM DAXGEROU6LY WOUNDED. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATAXE, this day. As Ihe result of a gcriotis assault at Matata on Saturday three natives, ■\Vharetaumona Roretana (alias Tan Rolleston), Frank Uekc, and Turiri Rikihana pleaded guilty to common assault on Hapopa Haimona, and were sentenced to two months' imprisonment each. Prisoners left for Auckland this morning. fin the application of the police a further charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was adjourned for eight days. The victim of the assault is in grave danger at the hospital in AVhakatane.
