HEAT WAVE IN U.S.A.

INDESCRIBABLE SUFFERING. EGG FRIED ON PAVEMENT. XEW YORK. June 7. The most disastrous June heat wave in the history of the Weather Bureau has now taken 112 lives. Soaring temperatures with low humidity lasted five days, and no relief is in sight. Forty-four deaths have been attributed to the heat during the past 24 hours. Temperature records everywhere are broken, including Xew York 95 deg., in the shade. Washington 00 deg. in the ! shade. Klmira (Xew York) 101 deg. in the shade. At Hagerstown (Maryland) 102 deg. in tlie shade were registered, and the mills closed down. The Xew England schools also closed. In various cities numerous Government and other offices are shut. Great anxiety is felt lest forests are burned and crops worth millions of dollars destroyed, which is predicted unless there is rain soon. A break in the terrific heat wave is reported from Pennsylvania, where a rainstorm decreased the temperature 15 degrees in two hours. The same relief is now predicted for other sections within 48 hours, but most places, including Xew York, nre expected to continue to suffer under the beat. There are scenes of indescribable suffering in the tenement districts of Xew York. Sleepless victims are crowding into the parks and on to fire escapes and roofs in search of relief. In other parts, owing to the fear of a water famine, police are arresting anyone who waters his lawn. A train was derailed at Xewark owing to the rails having expanded. There were no casualties. While some regions east of the Rocky Mountains report unseasonably low temperatures, rain brought some relief to parts of Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
