HOBSON COUNTY.
HIE YEAR-s WORK. The annual report of the Hobson County 'Council, submitted by the chairman, Mr X. Trounson. shows the receipts to be fK..-jn:) and the expenditure £43.ffi>4. The principal work of road formation includes Kopurii Tangalhl Road, Pee Hush Road, Palmer's Road. Tew's Koad, and Whatoro-Opouteke Rond. Arrangements were made for making a road from the TYairoa Bridge to Hoansa Road, thus stivlnj a short and casv uci-ese to Dargavillc. " Another pleasing matter was the completion of a metalled road from Dargavilie to W'hangarei. The amount of metal broken at the Green Hill quarry, 17,000 yards, was a record for the county. Owing to the excessive cost of upkeep or the main roads the report states that an effort should be made to induce the Hiffhway's Board to pay half the cost of maintenance in districts such as are in the county. The floods during the early part of last winter caused extensive damage to the roads in many of the ridines, the 'total cost of repairs beine about £,">OOO, of which the Government paid £1 for £1. This expenditure was such a setback to some of the ridings that permission was granted by the Minister to spread the cost over two -en sons, and provision will have to be made by the ridinss affected to meet their quota from this year's income. The cost of administration is pointed out to compare more than fnvoi'rnhlv with the nvcraze county: in fact, of the 120 counties only three in the Dominion, had a lower percentage of tost of administration on the basis of the payments.
