CANTERBURY'S ROUGH DAY.
SNOW, HAIL AND RAIN. CHRISTCHURCH DELUGED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Swept by snow, bail, and rain, Canterbury experienced a great southerly storm to-day, and reports from the country districts indicate that in some places the position is serious. Christchurch itself was deluged by a torrential downpour. The wind and rain were extraordinarily fierce in the late afternoon and early evening. Snow fell at Darfield, Methven, and Oxford. In the twelve hours up to 9 o'clock this morning two and a half inches of rain bad fallen in tlie country. To-day's storm was the worst that has been experienced in the city for probably 20 or 30 years. Many of the city streets to-night are flooded with storm water, which is whipped by the gale into drenching spray. In many places the tram cars are ploughing through water. The River Avon is higher than it has been for many years.
