AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS.
— 1 — I OPENING FESTIVAL ON JULY 25. The Auckland Competitions Society has decided that the opening date for the initial festival is July 25th next. The committee met last night and completed _ arrangement of the syllabus, which is as comprehensive as possible in music, literature, elocution, and dancing. In the music section particular attention is paid to choral items, both senior and junior, and there are also classes for band instruments. The vocal section includes national ballads and folk songs, and the dancing section national dances and folk dances. Elocution is a particularly comprehensive section, and embraces the whole range of that art. The society is arranging scholarships in as many classes as possible, .so that competitors who display talent worthy of recognition may be assisted to carryon the study of their several arts to the best advantage. The value of this will be felt by the many existing organisations in Auckland that depend for recruits upon the growing generation. There is a prospect of a steady stream of newly-discovered talent from competitions which can be fostered and used for such societies as require the exercise of the arts in question. The syllabus will be published within the next few clays, and the date of closing of entries, together with other information about the festival, will be advertised in the local Press in due course.
