OBITUARY.

ELWOOD HAYNES. INVENTOR OF THE MOTOR CAR. (Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK. April 14. The ileath has occurred of Elwood Havnes. inventor of the automobile.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) No man has more profoundly affected modern life than Elwood Haynes, the aspect of civilisation having been totally altered since he made in 1893 the '"first horseless carriage," the forerunner of the tens of millions of oil-driven vehicles which have made the world so small. Incidentally the invention of the motor car has changed the whole road plan of civilisation, as well as the railway plan. Mr. Haynes' original motor car is in the Smithsonian Institute. He was president of the Haynes Automobile Company, but had previously been manager of the Portland Natural Gas and Oil Company. He was the discoverer of tungsten chrome steel, alloy of chromium and nickel, alloy of cobalt and chromium, and developed the latter alloy for cutting instruments- He was the first fo use iiluminium in motor car building. He was the discoverer of stainless steel and the rotary valve gas engine. He was born in Indiana 68 years ago. a staunch Presoyterian. and a convinced prohibitionist. HERE FRITZ BAEDEKER. BERLIN. April 14. The death has occurred of Herr Fritz Raeelekcr. publisher of the famous Baoieker guide-books. Deceased was 31 rears of age. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.) Fritz Baedeker is a son of Karl, who published the guide book which is simply known as "A Baedeker," and ivithout which on the Continent one is in orphan. In its way Baedeker is as ivell known a word as Cook's or Lloyds, md the red books, crammed with accurate facts, have led millions all over the Continent. Tens of thousands of people lave been seen in every town in Europe ,vith the "Convertionbuch" in thee, lands painfully reading its questions o astonished natives. Baedeker has been i priceless boon, and the lamented death >f Fritz will not put it out of print.
