THIRTY PASSENGERS HURT. A MANCHESTER SENSATION. LONDON, April 7. A crowded tramear, which had just reached the top of a steen gradient at Rochdale, 11 miles north of Manchester, collided with a steam wagon that vas crossing the road. Amid the pitiful screams of women and children the tramear rapidly careened backwards down the hill. The driver failed to obtain control of the runaway.
Two or three men jumped from the car, but the other passengers flung themselves full length on the floor of the vehicle.
The tram left the rails at the foot of the hill and swung round and crashed sideways into a shop. It then turned over. Thirty passengers were seriously injured. T,ater details of the accident show that the collision dislocated the control box on the tramear. Fortunately Samuel Breadsloy, the conductor, kept his head. Ho called to the shrieking women and children to lie down on the lloor of the \ cur and on the seats. I
As a consequence of this precaution none of the casualties are likely to prove fatal.
One woman placed her baby beneath her own body. The infant was not injured, but the mother was severely cut by splintered glass. — (A. and X.Z.)
