LOCAL BODIES.

MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD

A mooting of the Mount Roskill Road Board was held Inst night. There were present: Messrs. G. E. Tansley (chairman), E. J. Herd, J. .T. Preston S. Scarborough, B. Brewer, J. H. Cooper and. S. Farrelly. Building Permits.—The building inspector, Mr. IT. Jessop, presented his annual report on tho building operation in the district for the yotii/ ended March 31. A total of 272 permits was issued to the value of £147,500. These included 14S dwellings and shops, three halls, 41 garages, 47 .alterations and additions. The sum of £400 2/0 was received in building permit fees, as against £271 8/6 for the "previous year. Fifteen permits have been issued this month of a total value of £10,210. There are 45 new buildings now in the course of erection. The chairman remarked that the district was growing, and it was necessary to keep abreast of the times by providing modern facilities to the various parts of the district as opportunity offers. Further consideration was given to the proposals of the Auckland Electric Power Board for an improved system of lighting, and the proposal was referred to the incoming bonrd. Mr. J. J. Preston reported that at present there are 57 gas lamps costing £300 6/6 per annum, and the new proposals give 141 electric lights at a cost of £076 8/6 per annum, which will light up the whole of the district.

Fire Board. —The Aucklnnd Fire Board ngreert to receive a deputation from the board with regard to the extension of the Fire Board's operations to Mount Roskill district. The chairman moved, and it was agreed to acquaint the Onehunga Borough Council and One Tree Hill Road Board with the action tnken oh this subject by Mount Koskill, and to invite them to join with the hoard in a deputation to tho Fire Board on the 22nd inst.

Road Construction. —The Auckland City Tramways Committee replied? to the board's request for information as to the tramway extension in Dominion Road. The committee suggested that it might be in the interest of Mount Roskill if the Road Board were to leave open the possibility of future tramway extension, and to arrange their road construction accordingly.

Storm Water.—Mr. P. Laycock offered to lay eight 12ft long field pipes, free of charge, to carry storm water from the property in Belfast Street, if the bonrd would provide the pipes. Referred to the Works Committee.

Dunedin Exhibition.—The chairman was appointed to represent the board at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, to be held on April 20, to arrange for the Auckland Provincial court at the Dunedin Exhibition. NORT.HCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Northcote liorough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. "W. K. Richardson) presided, aud Councillors J. 15. Tonar, Alfred rarrish, A. W. Smith, O. R. Brinsden, Cbns. Hunter, and \V. C. Smith were also present. Valedictory.—Mr. P. O. Devlin, who is leaving Northcote this week to take up duties with the Dannevirke Power Board, •was granted leave of absence for the balance of his term of office. A motion wishing him success in his new sphere of labour, and regretting his departure from Northcote was passed. Water.—/ The waterworks engineer, Mr. John Williamson, intimated that the March consumption of water was a record, viz., 2,303,000 gallons. The level of Lake Takapuna was 4ft 74in above hisu tide mark, or 8i inches lower than a month ago. Mr. Parrish wondered whether the Takapuna well had any influence in reducing the surface of the lake. Mr. Tonar pointed out there had only been an inch of rain during March. The engineer said this was really the only month this summer that the use of the hose had been necessary, the rainfall in other months sufficing. The continued purity of the water supply was shown by the analysis on behalf of the Board of Control.

JCew Roads.—Specifications for the dedication of new roads were adopted King Street Wall.—Mr. F. E. Powell reported tliat all the piles were on hand, and two were in position. The exea ration for the three anchors was finished Hospital Reserve. —Mr. L. S. Maxwell wrote that the cutting up of the hospital reserve, at the corner of Onewa Road, for building sections, would provide an opportunity of a roadway to the sea by continuing Queen Street through this block, which the council should urge. It was decided that n suggestion should be made to the new council; to further the matter. Basements. —The 0 Health Officer offered no objection to the use of a basement as a workshop, and this was granted, an undertaking being given that this portion of the house would not be occupied for living purposes. A letter from another owner, who had been prohibited from using a basement ftr living rooms, inquired if several other properties conformed to the by-lnws. This letter was "received.". the Mayor considering that such matters could not be investigated by a ratepayer. •

Exhibition. —Mr. Tonnr was appointed to attend the meeting this month regarding the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition.

Electricity.—An account for £52 10/. owing to Mr. V. A. Brown, and jointly incurred by the three boroughs of Takapuna, Birkenhead, and Nortbcote. -was stated by the Mayor to be an exnense preliminary to the formation of the Waitemnta Power Board, to which body it was referred for payment.

Motor Drivers.—The City Council intimated willingness to'undertake the licensing of drivers of motor vehicles, though the terms for outside bodies had not yet been determined.

Sundny Football.—The Northcote Association Football Club, which was recently granted the use of portion of Little Shon'l Bny Reserve, complained that a pai-ty of outsiders had played football there on 'Sunday, and the club's pavilion had been entered and damaged. The matter was sent along to the Reserve Committee, the police having been already informed
