' In the southern arm of San Francisco Bay there is a vast bed of oyster shells, and a company has now been started to dredge up this material and convert it ! into cement. The deposit is said to be of large extent and considerable depth. 1 It is proposed to lift the material with a suction dredge and convey it by pon- - toons to the plant. J The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of '! Lands, touched on a curious phase of ' human nature when he said recently ! that if Napier reclamation was carried \ on by private enterprise buyers of land "! would pay cheerfully for their pur- | j chases but if the Government did the ' j work then he would wager two to one s . that within three months half of them \ ' would be clamouring for a big reduc- ' I tion in the price to be paid. 5! Mr. W. A. Draffran, an English sports--2 j man, who is at present deer-stalking at ;! Ohau, stated (says the "Manawatu 3 ! Standard") that he had heard rumours . i in England of the remarkable sport to be . obtained in New Zealand, and had, in common with most others, only half . believed them. He had gone to the High ( Commissioner's office fbr definite inforl mation, but had been unable to secure [ ■ more than generalities, which were . worse than useless. Consequently he , had come to New Zealand fully expect- , ing to find that he had been "taken ; down," and had found instead that . nothing he had heard even did justice . to the possibilities of the country, either ■ for trout fishing or doer-stalking. With the exception of Dominion Road • , and one or two small side streets, the • [electric lighting scheme of the borough of I Alt. Eden has been completed and the burn. I j era from the street gas lamps which • ' have done duty in the borough for years I 1 past are being removed. The new light- ' ing of the borough extends from just I below the Symonda Street end of Mt. ' Eden to Boundary Road, the southern J , boundary of the district. , I An elderty m&n named Charles Banks, , an ex-resident of Dannevirke, was , . charged in the Police Court at What : ngarei yesterday with Ih e theft of a 3 .fowl, valued at 12/6, the property of a . J neighbour. Police evidence was to the 31 effect that the fowl had been discovered J hidden in a box. partly covered with 7 earth, in Banks' garden. Banks at first j : denied all knowledge of tjie fowl, but , j when the location was discovered, lie c confessed. The Bench convicted accused - j and ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon. In a maintenance case at the Wan- , ganui Court a wife stated (reports the 1 "Herald"), that she was sitting on 3 , Shakespeare Cliff on Christmas" Day t j with her four children, one a baby, and I she only had half a loaf, while her' hus- ! ! band was out at Kai Iwi beach, disports'ing himself in the surf with another j woman. She had offered to go back to t him and lead a life of misery for the 3 sake of the children, but he objected as Ihe -wanted his "freedom." '
