PRISONS APPOINTMENT.
NEW CONTROLLER-GENERAL. MR. MICHAEL HAWKINS. rise from: the ranks. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The appointment is announced of Mr. Michael Hawkins (Inspector of Prisons and Director of Prisons Works) to the position of Controller-General of Prisons in succession to the late Mr. C. liMatthews. Mr. Hawkins was born at Belfast, Ireland in 1862, and joined the prison service in JSB3 as a tradesman warder. He has the distinction of being the fii'St officer in the prisons service to rise from the ranks to the head of the Department. During his long association with the prisons service he has had. control of every one of the main prisons and institutions under the administration of that department. For many years ho was in charge of the Borstal Institution, Invercargill, and was largely responsible for a big reclamation scheme carried out by prison labour for the Invercargill Borough Council, whereby 2500 acres of land were reclaimed from the sea and converted into magnificent pasture land.
