TAIHAPE SPORTS. AXEMEN'S EVENTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Associations TAIHAPE, Tuesday. The third annual sports of the Ta:ihape St. Patrick's Day Club opened to-day in glorious weather, before an attendance, better than that of last year, despite the infantile paralysis restrictions. The Railway Department provided special train services, which resulted in a large gathering from the district between Taumarunui and Marton. Competitors came from as far north as the Bay of Islands, and as far south as luvercargill. In the axemen's events, the one 12in. chop decided resulted:—A. R. Woods (Turangarere), 1; W. J. Costello (Devonport), 2; XV. Geange (Karorl), 3. Time, 325. . The heats of the single handicap saw were got off, also the heats of the big chop. Three heats of the world's championship double hand 24in. saw resulted In the Thompson Bros. (Mangaweka), Costello and Knapp (Devonport). Woodward and Newman (Kakahi), Green and Kerr (Kawhia), Torrey and Hatton (Levin), and tlie Dickinson Bros (Taihape and Mangaweka),'qualifying for the final. ■ Four henfs of the second 12in. chop out of six' werevdecided. ■ The 12In. 'chops attracted' over 30 -competitors each, and there were 44. in the big chop. World record time was broken twice in the heats of the world's championship double ■ saw, but when the logs were measured they were found slightly under size, which was unlucky for the Thompson brothers and Woodward and mate, who had put np the records. The running events were confined mostly to heats. P. B. Thorns (Otahuhu), R. Morrison (Kotorua), A. Webb (Ohakune), L. Bourke (Tauranga), J. Moroney (Walton), C. Matheson (Invercargill). E. E. McSweeney (Mataroa), R. Mcßae (Kawakawa), G. McDonnell (Ohakune), 11. Wircmu (Ratana), A. Hall (Tailiape), nnd G. McCann (Taihape), h-ive qualified for the semi-finals of the £100 Sheffield Handicap. The half-mile handicap was v>oll by W. Mitchell, of Wanganui. with Preston, of Whangarei, nnd A. Harris, of Wellington, second and ttiird -respectively. ' •
