MISSED NEW YEAR'S DAY.

A NOVEL EXPERIENCE. OF CANADIAN CONSTRUCTOR. "Xo, nothing eventful happened on the way across from .Montreal to Auckland, no stowaways, no accidents, but. there's one thing, we missed Xew Years Day, and. being mostly Scotchmen, we felt it very much."

So said Mr. L. P. Renfrew, chief officer of the Canadian Government steamer Canadian Constructor, in reply to a question by a "Star"' reporter, on the vessel's arrival at Auckland from Montreal this morning.

He explained that through the vessel being on the ISOth meridian on January 1, Xew Year's Day was lost. As proof of this he presented the ship's log book. The last entry for the year 1924 was December 31. and the first entry for IQ_.> was January 2.

The Canadian Constructor left Montreal on November 20 and called at Panama on Dec-emiier 0. She experienced a line weather passage across, with the exception of some rou-h weather off Cape Hatteras. This" is the sixth trip of the Canadian Constructor, which is an oil burner, to Auckland. On the last voyage across she had a. -reat race with tbe Ham Line steamer. Trelevan, beating the latter to Auckland by a few hours. On this occasion the Treleven and Canadian Constructor had another race. The Trelevan left Panama five or six hours ahead of the Canadian vessel. Si far the Ham Line boat has not reported herself, the Canadian Constructor has won this time by several days. She averaged 12 knots' across and is capable of making 14 knots witli case. '
