BIRKENHEAD'S PROSPERITY.
BUILDING ACTIVITY. Substantial progress has been recorded throughout the Birkenhead borough during the past year. Sub-division of numerous large blocks of land has taken place in niauy parts of the district, leading to the expectation that before long these vacant spaces will be filled with attractive dwellings.
The building figures show a big increase over those for 19*23. Altogether 135 building permits were issued, compared with a total of 80 for the previous twelve months. Ninety-eight were fur new buildings of the value of £32,500, viz.: 03 dwellings, £30,027 (as against 34 in 1923, valued at £19,944); two shops, £400; one dwelling and shop combined, £1000; ten garages, £342; and 22 sheds, £791. The other 37 permits were for alterations and additions of a value of £250.1, viz.: 34 in connection' with dwellings, £2371 ; one for a church, £142; and two for sheds, £52. The aggregate value represented by the year's permits was thus £35,12.3. Desides the buildings mentioned, the erection of a block of eight ahjps at Highbury corner, at a cost of £0500, has been completed, and constitutes a splendid acquisition to the business centre of the town. The addition to the Birkenhead school at Highbury, of four rooms in brick, costing upwards of £5000, is also Bearing completio?!.
