POOR SCALE PLAYING.

AT MUSIC EXAMINATIONS.

COMMENT BY EXAMINERS,

The poorness of the scale playing, especially in the senior grade, was" unfavourably commented upon by the examiners, Professor YV. E. Thomas Mus, Doc., and Mr. E. S. Craston Mus, Bac, Durham, in criticising the half yearly examinations of the School of Music of the Auckland University College.

Much better passes would have been obtained in the senior grade if the scales had been more reliable, and the sight-reading better done. The weakest part of most of the candidates' work lay in the sight-reading scales and arpeggios, and the lack of elementary knowledge in the rudiments of music. In the theory of music the figured bass was generally well done, but in the harmonisation of the melody there was much to be desired in the choice of chords at the cadences. The counterpoint, especially in the fourth species, was nearly always admirable. In the transposition in the senior grade only one candidate sent in the correct key.

Generally the playing of the pieces was said to be better than in former examinations. PRACTICAL. Piano, for fellowship (F.5.M.., maximum 100, pass 73.—Esther Dodd.
