RAILWAYMEN'S HOURS.
RESULT OF THE BAXLOT. MAJORITY FOR 44 HOURS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.') ' WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Minister of Railways announced to-night the result of the ballot among members of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants employed in the locomotive, signalling and maintenance workshops, taken under the supervision of the Labour Department in accordance with the recommendation of the Wages Board. The voting showed a majority iof 1469 in favour of the 44-hour week. I I There had been 3242 ballot papers , issued and 28(52 returned. The issues placed before the men wore: — (a) A 44----1 hour week with overtime at rate and a i half for all time worked in excess of I eight hours on each of the first five days lof the week and four hours on Saturjday, the hourly rates of wages to remain ! !as at present, and a guarantee to be 'given of 44 hours' pay weekly. (b) A j 48-hour week, with overtime at rate and a half for all time worked in excess of eight hours and three-quarters on each of tfie first five days of the week. and four hours and a quarter on Saturday, the hourly rates of wapes to remain jas at present and a guarantee to be given of 48 hours' pay weekly. Details of the voting are as follow:— Total ballot parers issued.. .1242 Total ballot papers returned. 2SR2 Total votPR for 44 hours 21S1 Total votes for 4S hours US2 Informal votes 20 Majority for 44 hours.... 1469 i The Minister advised that the fiovernI 1 men£ would give effect to f.his decision.
