John Sweeney (36), who appeared in , a very shaky condition, w-as remanded i to October 24 on a charge of attempting to commit suicide. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. Five charges of wilful exposure were , preferred against Harold ■ SmaUbone i (22), for whom Mr. Hall Skelton 3 appeared. Accused pleaded guilty. Chief Detective Cummings said that i since early in August complaints had i been received that accused was riding i around on his bicycle on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. He would dis- : mount from his cycle when girls ap- i proached, and then commit the offences. ' Accused had been identified out of a ' large number of men by the young ] ladies. Accused was an excellent 1 worker, but men of his t3"pe were a - menace to the district and must be put '■ under restraint. Mr. Hall Skelton said that the matter ■ had exercised his mind a. great deal. : Smallbone had been a delicate man up to the age of 20. He had not attended school very much, and had only passed the second standard. Mentally '■ and physically accused, at the age of 20, was not up to the standard of a boy of 12 years. His parents were respectable people, and strict living, and it was difficult to know what to do with accused. He was a fine worker, and was given a good character by his employer. In view of his previous good character and ill-health, Mr. Poynton intimated that he would give accused a chance to reform. On the suggestion of Chief Detective Cummings accused was remanded until Friday for sentence, and in the meantime a report is to bo obtained from the Probation Officer.
