A' deputation of retailers and whole- ; salers in'the tobacco industry waited on j the- Hons. Massey and Anderson to-day, iwith a request that, special legislation be.enacted with reference to the sale of .tobacco, cigarettes, etc. They urged that a.U tobacconists should be licensed, and that all. shops dealing in .tobacco anil 'cigarettes be. required to close at the same hour as tobacconists. The deputation did not ask for a monopoly, but for free competition upon equal terms. .Tobacconists were suffering distinct hardship through illicit trading done by many who sold tobacco, etc., as a I sideline. ! Mr. Anderson thought it ■ possible "something would be done in the direction of licensing tobacconists. 1 Mr. Massey -said, without having fully ; considered the matter, it appeared to (him that tobacconists had a grievance, j Their requests seemed reasonable, and I might be given effect to.
