THE RABBIT PEST.

(By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") STRATFORD, this day. The great increase of rabbits in the Tahora and Whangamomona, districts, which are situated in the back country ' between Stratford and the Main Trunk, is causing alarm. Endeavours are being made to obtain some combined action on the part of the settlers to deal with the position, but so far nothing has been done. It is alleged that the cause of the trouble lies in the Ohura district in the King Country, where, it is stated, rabbits are thick, but that the settlers are not taking satisfactory measures to destroy them. A public meeting held at Whangamomona was addressed by Mr. Wright, a prominent ! Departmental officer, and an attempt is being made to form a Rabbit Board and Mr. Wright stated that Ohura came ! under the control of the Auckland district of the Stock Department, to which representation had been made by the ' Wellington office, asking that drastic action be taken in Ohura. Taranaki is comparatively free from rabbits, and j the position in the back country is a' cause of some uneasiness generally.
