Tilden defeated Wood, o—2, 6—l, 6—l, and ■ Richards defeated Patterson, 6—3, 7 —5, •,6— l. In the Tilden and Wood the Australian won the first game on Tilden's service after deuce had been called three times. Tilden broke Wood's service in the second and won after deuce. Both men played the back-court game, and both were volleying well. Wood's crisp strokes and Tilden's polished drives made the match good to see. Wood's service broke in the sixth again, and the I American led, 4—2. Wood dropped his * service in the eighth in a perfunctory ' manner, and Tilden won the set, 6 —2. 1 j In the second set Tilden forced the \ loss of Wood's service in the fourth game , with slashing forehand drives, which the Australian . was unable to touch. The' same happened in the sixth after Wood stood 40—love. The Ameriwon the, set, 6 —l. In the third set Wood and Tilden each lost on their service in the first two games. The Ameri- , can then settled down. Out-volleying his opponent and breaking through the tatter's service in the fifth and seventh, he won the set, C—l. RICHARDS V. PATTERSON. ; In the Richards v. Patterson match, the latter, through failing to make . returns from the ground and doublefaulting, lost the fourth game, and Richards led 3 —l. Richards was within a. point of losing fin his service in the j fifth, but pulled oat. The American ' again broke Patterso.-.'.< service in it c sixth, the latter double-faulting twice. Patterson made every effort to kepp Richards from advancing to the net by lobbing. Richards lost on his service in the seventh, Patterson's shots being anreturnable. The Australian won the . eighth to fifteen, his cannon service working splendidly, but Richards ran out the set, C—3. In the second set Patterson gained a 3—love lead. His service was magnificent, his fore-hand and back-hand shots both earning points, and his sliced-cut shots confounding Richards, who again losot on his service in the sixth. Patter- , son serving stood 40—love in the seventh , and ninth games. Nevertheless he lost, Richarde hammering his back-hand. Richards then broke Patterson's service in the eleventh and won the twelfth and set, 7 —5. Patterson fought hard in the third set and played well, but his failure to hold the service in the first game permitted the American to run out the set, &—4, by -winning alternate games. Both men played spectacular tennis, with fine overhead work by the Australian and remarkable recoveries and daring tries by both. Upon completion of the challenge round Patterson announced that the Australian team would proceed homeward via Chicago, Winnipeg, and other American centres, where they will play exhibition matches among themselves.
