The' weather was fine, and the going in capital order. The attendance was estimated at about 40,00 Q- i Gloaming's presence in the Chelmsford Stakes, both from sentimental reasons and a hope of seeing him again perform on the. track, proved a special attraction. The old horse had a great reception, crowds visiting his stall and cheering him heartily as he went to the post. His host of followers, : however, were doomed to disappointment in seeing him' a second time hailed as ncr of the Chelmsford Stakes. Glonrhing, ridden by the New Zealander, G. 'Young, was 1 always holding a good position. He took charge after entering the straight, and at the distance was clear from. Ballymenn, on which "another New Zealander, Con. Reed, had the mount Gloaming's victory was then loudly proclaimed, but this proved premature. Ashley Reed brought Heroic along with a rush, and beat the old champion comfortably. Ballymena ran well. He was always prominent, and, was just beaten out' of third place. Director finished fifth. Heroic's time, 1.50J, is a fresh Australian and New Zealand record for nine furlongs. CHELMSFORD STAKES, Of 1200SOV8. Wcight-fdr-ngc, with penalties and allowances. One mile and one furlong. HEROIC, eh c, 3yrs,-by Valais—Chersonese (.1. R. Corteen), 8:2, including 71b penalty—A. Reed % GLOAMING, b g, aged (O. D. Greenwood), '9.8, Including 71b penalty— G. Young ...' 2 WALLACE MORTLAKE, eh h, syrs (J. Baron), 7.12 3 Thirteen started, including Ballymena, Bonaparte and Director. The field, got away from an excellent start. Ballymena and Wallace Mortlake took command, | Gloaming lying fourth. The positions were practically unaltered until they reached the turn, where Gloaming moved up. Gloaming, Ballymena and Golden Voice enI tered the straight on terms, and two furl longs from home Gloaming' was leading. Heroic, who came, very fast, threw out a strong challenge, and, after a short tussle, won by a length and a-quarter, Wallace Mortlake beating Ballymena by a couple of lengths. Time, 1.50}. Several New Zealand horses started In other events during the day, but all ran unplaced; The Sydney Sunday papers' comments on the Chelmsford Stakes contest practically amount to a declaration that youth must be served. While giving full credit for Gloaming's great effort, and admitting R. J. Mason's contention that his horse required a bit more tuning up, they point out Gloaming's age was an undoubted handicap. when contending with the brilliant Victorian three-year-old colt. Heroic's worst fault is fractiousness. He is difficult to control, but yesterday, under the skilful guidance of Ashley Reed, he acted most kindly in this respect. The luck was against Gloaming.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) RACING IN ENGLAND. SANTORB WINS DONCASTER CUP. LONDON, September 13.
