DRUNKEN DRIVERS
_ — LAST OF THE FINES. WARNING FROM DARGAVILLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) D.VRGAVILLE, this day. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday a man named Cornelius McCarthy, a butcher, in business at Buawai, was i-fiiied £10 and costs for being drunk ; while in charge of a motor car. Dcfcn- | dant's solicitor pleaded that this was ,his first offence, and asked the magisjtrate to inflict a fine. The magistrate I said he had taken into consideration his previous good character, but a £}0 fine was inadequate in cases of this kind. Magistrates all over the Dominion were . now imprisoning without the option ofa i fine, and in future cases imprisonment would be tlie punishment, without respect to person or persons. He hoped the present case, wiiich was the fir^t of its kind in this district, would be a warning.
