THE SLAUGHTER OF THE NIKAU

(T> the Editor.) Sir,—l am glad to see that the destruction of nikau trees is being brought before the public, and I sincerely hope that the subject will be taken up, and something done to provent their slaughter. Personally, I have long deplored it; and during the late Winter Exhibition I did not attend just for that reason. What holiday, what festival, would justify such ruthless vandalism, such gross .destruction of beauty? Any true lover of nature can find no pleasure in withered loaves and fronds that might live for centuries if left in their natural environment. It almost makes one think of heads stuck on palisades to ornament a savage village.—l am, etc., LOVER OF TREES.
