MOB OUT OF HAND.
AMERICAN OFFICIAL KILLED. A RELIGIOUS DISTURBANCE. TEHERAX, July 20. Major Imbric, the United States Consul in Persia, was killed, and an American citizen named Seymour was wounded while they were photographing a public fountain. A police officer and six policemen were also injured. The fountain in question is dedicated to an Imam, or spiritual leader. It is alleged to have been the scene of a miracle performed a few days ago. This led to huge crowds making a pilgrimage to the spot. The mob became enraged and attacked Major Imbric. The tragedy is the culmination of strong anti-foreign, and particularly anti-British propaganda, by the native Press. The Government is unable to control the latter owing to the want of proper Press laws.— (Router.)
