FLOODS IN CHINA.
A THOUSAND DEATHS. VILLAGES SWEPT AWAY. PEKING, July 10. I Prolonged rains have caused the swollen rivers to flood the provinces of Honan, Huan, Anhwei, and Kiangsu. Hundreds of villages have been devastated. Tlie floods have caused 1000 deaths. A tremendous financial loss is involved. The capital (Peking) is also practically isolated except for the Tientsin railway, but this is threatened with inundation. Reports state that the district of Kalgan. some miles to the north-west of Peking, has been utterly destroyed. The neighbouring railways have been buried under debris and landslides. — (A. and X.Z. Cable.) CITY BADLY DAMAGED. FEW LIVES LOST. (Received 11 a.m.) PEKING, July 16. Telegram* from Kalgan state that the whole city south of the river is severely damaged.
