LOCAL BODIES.
NORTHCOTE. The ordinary meeting of the Xorthcote Borough Council was held last nignt. ine Mayor, Mr. XV. K. Richardson, presided, and Councillors F. O. Devlin. J. B- Tonar, A. Golden, A. Parrish.A. W. Smith, O. K. Brinsden, W. Kinley, C. Hunter, and W. C. Smith were also present. Balance Sheet. ■— The Auditor-General, Mr. G. F. C. Campbell, wrote with reference to the balance sheet "tag,'' agreeing that the drainage loan should be reimbursed from the general account the sum of £23 10/ paid for interest on land purchased for the septic tank site. The adjustment was made, and the balance sheec was thereupon adopted. Water. —The medical officer of health. j Dr. T. J. Hnghes, sought the Council's views with regard to a Metropolitan Water Board. The Mayor said they regarded this as the solution o fall future difficulties for ensuring an adequate water supply. Mr. Tonar contended that this proposal was long overdue, and that tbe City Council should have taken the initiative, so that water could have been brought from the Walkato. Waitakerc water was discoloured, and the word meant "muddy water," so that the Maoris apparently were aware of this fact centuries ago. Mr. W. C. Smith said he had always considered I "this fishing around Albany" for a supply was no use. The sooner a metropolitan scheme was inaugurated the better for everyone, in the interests of economy and | sufficiency. - The Council unanimously , resolved to support the suggestion. I Daylight Saving.—On the 'invitation of the N.Z. Sports Protection League, the Council decided to support the "daylight saving" suggestions. j MOUNT ROSKILL. A meeting of the above board was held last night. Present: Messrs. G. K. Tansley (chairman), J. H. Cooper, E. J. Herd, E. Brewer, S. Scarborough, S. Farrelly and J. J. Preston. | Loan.—The superintendent of State Advances forwarded the consent of His Excellency the Governor-General of New Zealand for the raising of a loan of £1250 by the board for the purpose of laying a . water main in Mount Albert Road. j Bond Reduced.—Mr. Eastman, whose I tender of £22,000 had been accepted for I a part of the new drainage scheme, waited on the board and asked that the bond of 150 per cent on his contract demanded by the board be reduced to 10 per cent. He stated that the specifications did not ask for bondsmen, and he had not allowed anything in the way of commission to bondsmen in his tender. His deposit on the contract was £300. It was agreed to reduce the bond to 10 per cent on all the ] contracts. Scoria Pit Returns.—The foreman reported that he had sold 480 yards of scoria of different grades, and 400 yards had been used by the board. Lovers' Lane. —At the request of Mr. C. G. Moffatt and five other ratepayers, it was decided to change the name of Lovers' Lane to Parau Street. Mr. Moffatt stated that the Maori word Parau was the name of the Maori chief governing the Xorth Island West Coast tribes. Building Permits.:—Fifteen building permits were issued during the fortnight ended July 15, of a total value of £8715. Mount Albert Road. —The Main Highways Board is unable to declare Mount Albert Road as a main highway. It was decided to seek the co-operation of the Mount Albert Borough Council to get this decision reversed. Richardson Road.—The Avondale B>rough Council is making temporary repairs to a 1 pc-ition of Richardson Road iying between the two bridges, pending Mount Roskill Road Board undertaking the full repairs to the road at their expense. Subdivisions.—Plans of the subdivision of eight estates were submitted; four were approved and the rest deferred.
