AN ILLEGAL PREMIUM.
HAIRDRESSER FINED. MONEY TO BE RETURNED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. Reserved judgment was delivered by Mr. Stout, S.M., to-day in a case wherein the Inspector of Factories, on behalf of Margaret Flossie Martin, of Wanganui, proceeded against 7ane Barnett Currie, hair specialist of Palmerston North, claiming a refund of £25, part premium paid to defendant as occupier of a factory by Miss Martin in respect of her employment. The inspector also proceeded against the defendant for an alleged breach of the Shops and Offices Act, "That, being the occupier of a shop within the meaning of the Act, she did receive a premium in respect of the employment of Miss Martin while the latter was employed as an assistant." His Worship said it was admitted that defendant's premises were a "shop" within the meaning of the Act. Therefore, Miss Martin was an apprentice and an assistant. Defendant, by accepting a premium to teach her, committed a breach of the Act. He ruled that the £25 paid should be returned, and fined defendant £2 for breach of the Act, stating that, as she may have acted in a Ixinafide manner, a heavy penalty was not called for.
