NEW THAMES ROAD.

OPEN FOR LIGHT TRAFFIC (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The damage done on . May 17 by flood waters that carried away Kauaeranga Bridge, thus stopping all road communication with the South, has now been repaired, the new bridge and road being open for light traffic yesterday. The old bridge covered the boundary between the borough and county, and the local bodies, instead of re-erecting it, decided to ask the Public Works Department to push on with work on the new bridge, which had already been started on a more direct route, meanwhile ■bending all their energies to completing the roads to that bridge. The 'borough portion is in good condition to carry heavy traffic, ibut the county portion will only carry light traffic. It is expected that within a week or so the road will become consolidated. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council, the engineer (Mr. E. F. Adams) presented a report, showing that the expenditure on the new direct road amounted to £2135. This is £513 more tlian the estimated expenditure on the same road if carried out according to the original plan, and which would have been finished next season. In view of the fact that the estimated cost of the . •borough's share of replacing the new ■bridge on the old route would have been £1000, the council waa extremely well satisfied, and passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Adams for his -energy and care in the construction of the new road.
