THE DORSET'S FIRE.
HOW IT WAS EXTINGUISHED. ! SIX TIRE ENGINES USED. ; j DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £10,000. ' ! Six fire brigades were requisitioned to extinguish the fire that occurred when the Dorset was about to leave Glasgow on March 20. The steamer, which arrived at Auckland this morning, had just cast off from the wharf at Glasgow when at 10.35 p.m. smoke was noticed issuing from the ventilators of No. 4 hold. The tugs were alongside and the ship wa» immediately tied up again, and the crew mustered at the fire stations. Sis Glasgow fire brigade engines were quickly on the scene, and the firemen, with life lines around them, descended to a. depth of 35 feet to get at the seat of the fire, but were overcome by smoke and had to return. Enormous quantities of water were poured in from six lengths of hose, and the ship took a heavy list to port. But by the use of the ship's pumps, which were immediately set going to remove the water, the vessel rapidly righted herself. Two hours after the discovery of the fire the outbreak was completely extinguished, having caused damage estimated at £10,000.
