DEFENCE NOTES.

•' • j The members of the 23rd and 30th | (Kingsland) Senior Cadet Companies | attended a church parade at St,' Paul's | Church on Sunday morning last. The' Auckland Artillery Band, numbering over 30 instruments', under Lieutenant Cater, headed the parade. The strength of the 23rd and 30th companies was three officers I and 169 other ranks, and three offlcerß and 125 other ranks respectively. Lieutenants \V. A. Moore and H. A. Blakey were in charge of the units.- The total strength of the parade was over 330 officers nnd men, which, considering the fact that the parade was purely voluntary, is particularly meritorious. All units are training hard for the annual hosing competitions. The lads of the Kingsland companies (23rd and 30th) and the Avondale company (37th) are showing good progress ami should prove a hard proposition. The eliminating bouts for these companies will be decided during the second j week of July. The Drill Hall this week presents a very unusual appearance. Beds have been placed In the hall for the use of visiting naval men, the arrangements being in the hands of i the V.M.C.A. The Nelson ' Senior Cadets were judged to be the winners of the recent Campbell statuette competition. , This company won the competition last year. No particulars! ns regards the judging are yet to hand, but '. lit is understood that the points were- very] even. j The 2Sth Company Senior Cadets held a farewell social and dance in St. Benedict's j Hall last night. The medals for the boys i of the company who fired for the Imperial I Challenge Shield wore presented by Major j Finnis. In the shield competition, this com- ( pany gained eighth place, there being a J very large number of units competing. . The parade of Senior Cadets on the I Prince's wharf last Saturday in connection! with the arrival of the Special Service I Squadron, numbered over 600. The Ist Battalion (Training College) in charge of Cap-! tain Eae, formed the guard of honour, the Sacred Heart, Technical College and- the St. Stephen's Maori Boys - College battalions also parading. Music was supplied by the '■ Auckland Senior Cadet Band and the Tech-1 nlcal College Trumpet Band. Major G. P. O'Shnugbnessy was in command, with Lieutenant It. S. Judscn, V.C., acting aB adjutant. A number of officers from the field and garrison batteries took- advantage of an invitation to inspect H.M.'s. Hood on Wednesday. Chief interest naturally centred on the vessel's armament. There were also pre-' sent several members ot the permanent staff, j The King's College Battalion has been selected to march with the colours on the King's Birthday Parade oh June 3. The 3rd Battery N.Z.A. (Major C. N. Newman, D.5.0.) and the 4th (Howitzer) Battery, N.Z.A. (Captain W. F. Stilwell, M.C.) will hold special parades on Tuesday; May 27, in preparation for the King's Birthday parade. The 29th Senior Cadet Company (Ponsonby) held th?lr annual social and dance on Tuesday last In Wright's Hall, Newton, i to farewell the' members of the unit who will shortly be posted into tbe Territorials. I A special general meeting of the Auckland Military Sports Association has been called for Tuesday next at 8 o'cloct. .The business will be ln connection with the adoption of the new set of rules. I All cadets in the night companies who were born In the year 1906 will be medically examined at their respective company headquarters .during the forthcoming week. The postings will commence on June G. j All units are now training hard for the King's Birthday parade on June 3.
