"I didn't mean to steal them- I meant to send them back," said Alfred Denis Laurie, a young man, when charged with the theft of a suit case, gladstone bag and rug, of a total value of £4 7/6. It was shown that Laurie had been boarding at a house in Auckland, and that he took the articles one day when the landlady was, absent. Laurie went on board a boat, on which he obtained employment as a seaman. He was arrested at a port near Russell. The magistrate imposed a fine of £5 the default being fixed at seven days. While walking through Myers Park a constable heard obscene words being used by some unseen person, and on making inquiries he ascertained that Conrad Stephen Powell, a young man, lying on a sofa on the back verandah, of a house in Grey. She went into a restaurant on Saturday, and when the proprietor refused to serve her she uplifted a cup and saucer and smashed them on the table.
