! (Before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.) "BORROWED" BAGS. "I didn't mean to steal them- I meant to send them back," said Alfred Denis Laurie, a young man, when charged with the theft of a suit case, gladstone bag and rug, of a total value of £4 7/6. It was shown that Laurie had been boarding at a house in Auckland, and that he took the articles one day when the landlady was, absent. Laurie went on board a boat, on which he obtained employment as a seaman. He was arrested at a port near Russell. The magistrate imposed a fine of £5 the default being fixed at seven days. SWORE AT HIS SISTER. While walking through Myers Park a constable heard obscene words being used by some unseen person, and on making inquiries he ascertained that Conrad Stephen Powell, a young man, lying on a sofa on the back verandah, of a house in Grey. Street, was responsible for all the noise. He was banging a bottle of beer on the boards, and tellin<r his sister what he thought of things. So he was locked up, and it cost him £5 this morning. Powell also pleaded guilty to a charge respecting a breach of his probation and on this he was remanded till Thurs' day for sentence. TROUBLESOME. Thomas Goodman was fined £3, in default seven days, for having used threatening behaviour, and £5, in default 14 days, for obscene language. A PETULANT CUSTOMER. Following on the parade of 27 inebriates, mostly first offenders, who had been celebrating Easter unwisely, can,* Mary Smith (52), charged with drunW ness and mischief. She went into a restaurant on Saturday, and when the proprietor refused to serve her she uplifted a cup and saucer and smashed them on the table. Arrest followed Smith was fined 20/, cab 2/6, for being ?/6 n r;,rt d . 10/ f ° r China ' P»» 1/6 restitution, and 10/ witness' expenses The default was fixed at 48 hours in each case. -
