NO MORE WAR?
REDUCTION OF ARMAMENTS. CONFERENCE PROPOSED. NEW YORK, March 30. The Tokyo correspopdent of the New York "Times" states that Mr. W. E. Borah's resolution asking the President of the United States, Mr. Calvin Coolidge, to call a further disarmament conference has given the disarmament movement in Japan a further impetus. The Japanese Navy Department has already appointed experts to study the question of reduction of auxiliary crift and aircraft in order to have all data ready. Naval officials in Japan consider that it will only be a matter of a short time until such "a conference is called to check the growing competition in non-capital ships. The Japanese frankly hope that American public opinion will force the issue. Japanese interest in the question is doubly great in view of the financial burden of reconstruction. Competition in ligbt craft would, it is considered, be disastrous. At tbe same time the "Jingo" elements view with alarm the activities of other nations in this direction. The naval authorities in Japan consider that the abandonment of the Singapore base scheme is a demonstration of Britain's desire to check competition in naval armament, and her willingness to participate in a conference for this purpose.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
