PONSONBY CRUISING CLUB. ' MARIE WINS LIPTON CUP. The Ponsonby Cruising Club held harbour races on Saturday, the chief event being the annual race for the handsome trophy presented by Sir Thomas Lipton. a vice-president of the Ponsonby Club. The other events were the race for the Hewson Memorial Cup presented to the club by friends of the late Mr. Arthur Hewsou, one of tbe founders of the club and for many years the Hon treasurer. The other races were a general handicap for the M, V, and S Classes, the T and _ Classes and a launch handicap for the kohn C The events started off St. Mary's Bay Mr Jas. Donald's fine launch Marion V. acting as flagship. The guests included officers and rlpresentatives from a I local clubs, who were specially invited to view the race for the Upton Cup Mr Eliot Davis owner of Queen March, was also an interested spectator. I This event started at 2.30 p.m.. after a committee had inspected the ballast and other equipment and changed fair-play men The corn-Be was from starting line, between launch Marion D. and mark moored south, thence round Resolution buoy off Parneli, thence round Saltworks beacon off Rangitoto reef, thence back round Resolution buoy to finishing line. From a nieelv judged start. Forest Gold, \enus and Marie got away together at gunhre, with Valeria, Varuna, Mowai and Doreen following in this order. Marie and Valeria worked over towards the northern shore on the beat down harbour with Forest Gold and Varuna more in the middle and the other three nearer the southern shore. Rounding Resolution, Valeria led Marie by a few lengths with Forest Gold, Varuna. Mowai, Doreen and Venus in this order. On the close haul down channel to the Rangitoto reef mark Marie slowly overhauled Valeria, and passed her before reaching it, rounding with a nice lead, with tbe rest some distance behind Valeria. On the run back to Resolution the wind fell away, and Marie increased her lead, rounding Resolution abou\ a minute to the good. On the run up harbour to the finish Valeria drew level, and off the western wall she hnd a length advantage, but Marie slipped through his lee, Valeria's skipper giving him a sporting chance by refraining to blanket Marie, and the latter getting the gun by a margin of seven seconds." the times being: Marie 5h 40m 535, Valeria 5h 41m, Venus Rh 15m 48s, Forest Gold 6h 18m, Doreen 6h 18m 255, Mowai 6b 21m 225. Marie thus won the Upton Cup for the Akarana Yacht Club for the second successive year. Both the winner and runner up were heartily cheered from the flagship. The Hewaon Cup. This event started at 3 p.m.. the course being the usual harbour one. From a good start Rona was first away, followed by Idler, Queen March, Iron Duke, Nyria and Joan. Kona and Queen March went into the lead from the first, while Joan, which started 55 seconds late, also worked into a good position. Queen March was sailing well and led Rona round the first mark, but on the lead across to Shoal Bay Rona passed her and kept the lead till the finish, although Queen March challenged her several times, especially on the second round nt-il nt the ttnlsh. Th" iinish was timed : Rona 4h 47m 455, Queen March 4h 47m 535, Joan 4h 50m 41s, Idler 4h 52m Gs, Nyria 4h 59m 465, Iron Duke 5h 0m Is. Kona wins the Hewson Cup by eight seconds from Queen March, with Joan third. The winner was sailed by Jack Gilford, with the usual ytmnrc crew. Queen March was sailed by David Jackson. The M, V, and S Classes. A general handicap for the M, V. and S I classes saw thirteen starters, which were sent away at 2.40 to a good start. Surprise being first away, followed by Atangatai. Mollie, Lancia. Wild Wave, Champagne, Magic, Aratu, Namu, and Irene. Surprise. Magic, Champagne and Mollie soon led the fleet in this order, the two leaders having a close race throughout. On the completion of the first round, Surprise led Magic by five seconds, wbicb Magic reversed shortly after, but Surprise was sailing better in the Hght wind, and the fiuish was: —Surprise 4h 8m 435. Magic 4b 8m 40s, Champagne 4h 9m 225, Millicent 4h 14m 21s. Aratu 4h 15m 40s, Wild Wave 4h 20m 14s, Namu 4h 34m 10s, Atangatai 4h 44m ss, Lancia 4h 44m 7s. Corrected times place Champagne first, ; Surprise second, and Magic third. Mollie | retired after fouling a mark. The T and V Classes. This race started at 2.30, Sea Nymph being first away, closely followed by Kistner, Sea Gnome, Sea Elf, Sea Mew, Cupid. Westward and Resolute. Sea Nymph and Kismet led the field at the first mark, tbe former having a lead of ten lengths from Kismet rounding the mark. Sea Gnome leading the others. Sea Nymph held her advantage round the next two marks, but on the beat down harbour. Kismet passed her off Shelly Beach, Cupid being third boat. Sea Nymph caught Kismet on the second round, and the iinish was timed : Sea Nymph 4h 40m 465, Kismet 4h 41m ss, Cupid 4h 41m. 40s, Sea Gnome 4h 41m 4Us, Westward 4h 40m 475, Sea Elf 4h 47m 335, Resolute 4h 50m 21s, Sea Mew 4h 53m 295. Corrected times place Westward (17m r>9s) 3, Sea Nymph (4m 20s) 2, and Sea Elf (11m 18s) _. The Kohn Cup.
