CRICKET.

ENGLISH-BORN V. AUCKLAND. YVIX FOR AUCKLAND TEAM. A tciim captained by Lord .Tellieoe. and composed of members of the Government House eleven, with reinforcements from 11.M.A.X. Melbourne, played an Auckland team at Eden Park yesterday afternoon, and provided nn interesting afternoon's cricket, in which the English-horn players sufTcreil defeat by four wickets. The feature of the Government House innings was a hard-hitting partnership between Nettleton. a North Shore batsman, nnd Lieut. Artnltagc. of H.M.A.S. Melbourne, who batted in fine style after their side had made a bud start, and were chiefly responsible for setting the Aucklanders a total of 207 to beat in a couple of hours. The local tenin, including live representative players, were put in a good position ns the result of a forceful innings by E. Horspool. nnd free hitting by N. Sncddcn nnd M. Flynn. When 180 runs were up, the Governor-General, who was handling his attack well nnd at the same time trying out the unknown quantities of his side for howling talent, discovered an effective howler in Lieut. Sltwell, who got three wickets for 2(1 runs. As a consequence the Aucklanders had to try out all their batsmen to piny out time, aud topped their opponents' score by only 80, with one wicket in hand.
