IN SANDERS CUP RACE. HEAT AWARDED TO LINNET. FOURTH RACE POSTPONED. ',By Telegraph.—Special to "Star."i WELLINGTON. Saturday. The third race for the Sanders Cup was decided over a triangular course the same as yesterday afternoon. The iud"es considered tbe wind too fluky to jay of a windward aud leeward course. The start was made at. 10.51 a.m.. the wind being a very light westerly. Just before the start the wind freshened to a nice sailing breeze from the west. It was a very good start, the Linnet being first avvav* followed by dune. Rona. Konini, Murihiku and Peggy all together, .lust before crossing the lino June and Rona collided, as both were close to tho starter's boat. On the run to Jerningham buoy soon after the start the wind went more northerly. Half way to Jerningham Linnet had a lead of six lengths from Murihiku. June, Rona. Konini and Peggy three lengths behind in a perfect line. Rona had the best position on the weather end of the line, and slowly drew on Linnet. Konini being next. Xearing the mark the breeze freshened into a nice sailing breeze from the west, and held throughout with occasional light spells. It was now a beat to the Coromandel mark, and all took different courses. Peggy and -Tune stood inshore, Linnet and Kona standing off on the port, Murihiku and Konini following this line. Local knowledge was not the best, as Linnet. Rona and Murihiku were now the leading boats, with Konini fourth, while Peggy and June were an eighth of a mile away. Rona now woke up. and in another five minutes she was the leading boat. It was a good test of windward work, and Vie. Lidgard, skipper of the Rona, did well. On the broad lead back to the wharf all set leaders. Rona set her spinnaker well forward, the others following. Little change took place, Peggy picking up a bit aud passing Konini. The times at the completion of the first round were:— Rona .. .. llh 31m 40s Linnet .. .. llh 32m 18s Murihiku .. llh 32m 45s Peggy- .. .. llh 33m lis Konini .. .. llh 34m 0s June . . _.. llh 35m 10s On the second lead to Jerningham the Rona carried her spinnaker slacked wel! away, and it seemed to help her, the others following later. Peggy had trouble in setting her spinnaker aud Konini again passed her. Rona's Good Lead. It was again a beat to the Coromandel mark, tho wind making it a a long leg on the port hand and a short one on the starboard. Peggy carried her leading jib on the wind throughout the last two races, and Murihiku did the same to-day. Peggy and Konini had a good go by themselves, Murihiku laying off on a long board oil the port as did the June. Rona kept right for her mark, working well out on Linnet : s weather all the way. It was again a broad lead to the wharf mark, and no change took place in the positions. The wind fell lighter and patchy, but came again to a good sailing breeze. Now the boats were strung out in procession, Rona being about as far ahead of Murihiku as the latter was from Linnet, and she in turn the same distance ahead of Peggy, June and Konini bringing up the rear, running- neck and neck. Linnet picked np a bit. The times on the second round were: Rona .. .. J2h 11m 5s Murihiku .. 12h 12m 30s Linnet .. .. 12h 12m 45s Peggy .. .. 12b 13m 50s Konini .. .. 12h 15m 10s June .. .. 12h 16m Os On Different Courses. Rona and Linnet kept ■ their spinnakers up, changing over from starboard to port as they rounded, Linnet's crew making the better job. On the lead to Jerningham the third time Linnet sailed better and passed Murihiku, gaining on Rona. On the third beat to the Coromandel mark Rona and Linnet worked well off shore, .Konini and June following, but Murihiku and Peggy worked more inshore, the outer course being the better on each round. At Coromandel the times on the third round were:— Rona. 12h 30m 4s; Linnet, 12h 40m 4s; Murihiku, 12h 41m 12s; Konini, 12h 42m 15s; June. 12h 43m 255; PeggY, 12b 43m 40s. No change took place on the run to the finishing line but Linnet gained on Rona, and the finish was:— Rona .. .. 12h 49m 40s Linnet .. .. 12h 50m 31s Konini .. .. 12h 43m 10s Murihiku .. 12h 53m 20s June .. .. 12h 55m 0s e cf-y • • • • *2h 55m 35s A protest was entered against Rona by June for a foul at tiie start of the race, and another protest against Rona was lodged by Linnet for bumping the starter's launch. Both were the outcome of a very crowded start. A DISAPPOINTED CROWD. THREE BOATS IN THE PINAL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! WELLINGTON. Saturday. The fourth race was delayed pending the result of the protests. At 5 p.m., after over two hours deliberation by the Sailing Committee, the protests were upheld, and the Rona was disqualified, Linnet being awarded the first place. Rona. Murihiku and Linnet will now compete in the finals. Tbe next race is on Monday at 10.30, over a windward and leeward course. Oreat disappointment was caused to the very large number of spectators gathered at the boat harbour at the postponement of the fourth race. The weather conditions were ideal for sailing.
