YACHTING.

WHANGAREI REGATTA.

A SUCCESSFUL OUTING.

EVENTS KEENLY CONTESTED.

As a direct opposite to last New Tear's | Day, the first day of 1924 broke gloriously fine, and a typical summer's day resulted. As a consequence, Onerahi, the scene of the annual Whangarei Harbour regatta, was very gay. By midday a record uumber o£ visitors from Whangarei and surrounding districts gathered, by rail, launch and motor, and the natural grandstand of the hillside was a galaxy of colour, the native bush making a splendid background. The regatta officials arc to be congratulated on the smooth running of the various events, and great praise is due to the secretary. Mr. H. A. Peebles, and the treasurer, Mr. G. A. Bethell, for tbe even running of their Important departments. The president (Mr. W. N. .Tack) was indefatigable in his efforts, and saw to the comfort of visitors and patrons generally. The handlcappers made some close adjustments, and the assistance of Mr. W. A. Wilkinson was much appreciated by the committee. The rowing events did not bring forward a great deal of competition, but the success of St. George's Club should not be detracted from. Its representatives were the more finished oarsmen, and deserve every credit. Great credit is also due to Scoutmaster Ferguson and his team of "tigers" for their work In transmitting results from the flagship to the secretary's office.

The s.s. Rimu acted as flagship, being suitably dressed for the occasion, Captain E. Keatley and his officers lending every assistance to the officials and competitors. There was hardly any wind in the early morning, and the starter decided to postpone the sailing events until noon, by which time a light breeze had set In from the south-east, which freshened In the afternoon into a good sailing breeze, and enabled all events to finish early. The entries In all events were very good, showing a considerable increase on last year's total. Th« receipts from the gates and other, sources also were good, and The regatta was the best held ou the Northern harbour for many years. The officials in charge of the events were as follows :—„owing: Starter, Mr. T. Ryan ; clerk of course, Mr. A. Drever; Judges, Mr. h. r. Steele and V. Dunne.
