SYDNEY'S QUIET HOLIDAY,

SYDNEY, January 1.

New Year's Eve is regarded as the quietest on record. The city streets were deserted, mainly because Monday, being a public holiday, people went to the beache3 and holiday resorts.

Apart from an isolated scuffle between police and several larrikins, who were starting a bonfire in a slum district in the evening, the old year passed away without incident.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.")
