THE VIRGIN BIRTH DISPUTE. NEW YORK, January 1. With the Christmas truce over the controversy between Fundamentalists and Modernists regarding the Virgin Birth lias spread to every religious denomination. Even Roman Catholics and Jews are participatisig. ; Dr. Hayes, Roman Catholic Archbishop :of New York, preached upon obedience, ' declaring that the great fundamental 1 truths of Christianity remain such ivhothor believed or not. ] Prominent Jewish rabbis declare that I tho Bible is not the word of God. and controversies among Christians must con- | tinuo so long ac they consider man a fallen being. Heads of the Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant clergy have issued a joint New Year appeal to the American people asking them not to deny their children the priceless heritage of religious teachings. Prominent Episcopalian laymen have begun a series of conferences between the bishops and recalcitrant ministers at which an endeavour is being made to reconcile differences. Sermons on Sunday covered a wide range. Some Episcopalian ministers urged the foundation of a separate Modernist Church.
