MATCH AGAINST NELSON.
WON BY FIVE WICKETS
(By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.)
NELSON, Tuesday. The cricket match. Auckland v. N.ejson, was ended at 5.30 yesterday in a win: for Auckland by five wickets. After the esual fluctuations in the fortunes of tho game, in >thelr first innings Nelson made 103 before they lost their first wicket, and then lost the whole ten for another 100 runs. Auckland's last four wickets only added 30 runs. Contrary to their expectations. Nelson in their second Innings with seven wickets down for 70, did not appear likely to reach 100, but Langbeln and Giblin added r>2 for the eighth, and the innings realised 130, leaving Auckland to get 145 to win. I'ark and Garrard opened Auckland's second inninirs. and Garrard was run out for 1. With four good wickets down for 62 the game veered towards Nelson, but Hemus and Montefh. playing rcrv good cricket stubbornly took the •total .to 144. or a tie. when Hemus was bowled, with a sterling 4S to his credit. Goodwin made the winning hit—a three— and Monteith was SS not out. being unconquercd in both Innings. The latter's batting was very correct and attractive. Neale and Eden are classy batsmen, the latter playing somewhat after C. Dacre'a style. Haycock. Louisson, Lanehein, Giblin and Max are good sound batsmen of a less attractive style. Tbe fielding and wicket-keeping on both skies were distinctly good. Of the bowlers Newman (a left-hander who represented Canterbury last yean. Laycocfc, Louisson and R. Eden were the best of the local men. while Coates. Cooper. Hemus and Goodwin were Auckland's best quartette. The wicket was a fairly good one, but the outfield was far from good. Nclsonians. as well as Aucklanders, evince great interest in the meeting of Auckland and Wanganui on January o and 7. The scores are as follows: —- NELSON.—First Innings.
