DASTARDLY ASSAULT.

ON OPERA HOUSE MANAGER

ABSENCE OF MOTIVE.

Shortly after eleven o'clock on Sunday night Mr. Clym Edgares, manager of the. Opera House, was the victim of a most dastardly assault by which he received severe injuries to his head. Mr. Edgares, who had earlier in the evening returned from attending a theatrical picnic down the harbour, decided to go for a short walk before retiring. It was just about eleven o'clock when he was going to his homo in Princes Street and had just turned the bend at Emily Place, and opposite the Auckland Racing Club's offices, when he suddenly received a severe blow on the head which dazed him completely. Mr. Edgares soon recovered but could see nobody, nor did he hear anyone about and the place was wrapt in quietude. Bleeding freely, Mr. Edgares made his way home but all attempts to get a doctor on the 'phone failed and he eventually had to go to the police station. Here the seivices of Dr. Tewsley were secured and some four stitches were found necessary to a bad cut on the temple. The motive for the assault is a mystery, as no attempt was made to rob Mr. Edgares, and his assailant simply struck the blow and fled.
