A CLOSE CALL
BATHER NEARLY DROWNED. J i A boy named Eric Liddell, who lives , at Kowhai Street, Kingsland, had a < narrow escape from drowning yesterday off Shelly Beach. He was swim- , ming on the wrong side of the reef, where bathers are warned of danger • when the wind and sea are high, and got into difficulties owing to the strong , current and heavy sea. Mr. A. J. Hall, of 14, Church Street, Ponsonby. and . Master James Edmonds, or 30. Norfolk Street, Ponsonby, went to his assistance, but on account of the adverse current and sea it was about a quarter of an hour before they reached Liddell, who by that time had been down once and was exhausted. After getting him ashore artificial respiration was applied, but it was about half an hour before the lad responded to the treatment. After recovery he was sent home apparently not much the worse for his experience, though had it not been for the prompt and plucky action of Mr. Hall and Master Edmonds he would certainly have lost his life.
