BUSH FIRES IN SOUTHLAND.

SAWMILILERS LOSE HEAVILY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERC'ARGILL, Monday. Bush fires have been raging around Tuatapere, and it was only due to the almost superhuman efforts of the firefighters, who worked day and night, that any timber yards, dwellings, or places of business stand to-day. The fires were the most severe since the disastrous fires of 1916.

Messrs. Hamilton and Co., and the Southland Sawmilling Co., have suffered heavily in regard to damage to tramways," especially the latter company, which has been compelled to wagon its timber, pending the relaying of about 40 chains of damaged tramway?.

Mr. D. Gait's sawmilling plant »t Papatotara was burned to the ground. Mr. Young's sawmill at Orawia, near Tuatapere, has been closed owing to the shortage of water.
